My abstract geometric paintings from the first years of my career gave way to semi figurative works in the late '70s, suggested by places and things seen. Since that period I have sought to make works capable of functioning without reference to what is portrayed, while not denying figurative content My esteem for certain artists is unwavering: Mark Rothko, Clyfford Still, Jackson Pollock, Joan Mitchell, Pierre Soulages, Howard Hodgkin... I have a particular affection for the art of the English painter Prunella Clough, who was inspired by the beauty of simple things overlooked or rejected: a coil of rusty wire, a crumpled paper cup, a muddy puddle... This new series is dedicated to her memory. In tipping the balance slightly more towards abstraction I feel I am taking a step in the right rdirection. |
