“This new theme evolved all by itself. I was planning a composition in the ‘Brasserie Lipp’ series when, zooming in on a detail of a photograph of the restaurant whose walls are covered in mirror, I found myself reflected. I have wanted to paint self portraits for a number of years, but I needed something to get me started, some kind of a trigger.“
Since completing the four charcoal drawings in 1985, it has taken 35 years for Oliver to continue what he had started. But all it took in the end was his silhouette, reflected accidentally in a maze of restaurant mirrors...
The next step was to exploit showcases, where he could see his face amongst all these objects which doubled and redoubled in reflections so confused that he could no longer fathom them out. Which in turn leaves the viewer free to to make his or her interpretations.
